A recent upgrade to the messaging program Telegram now lets users establish accounts using unknown numbers based on the blockchain rather than mobile phone numbers. However, users will now be able to conceal numbers from everyone, gratifying consumers who value privacy-focused features. Telegram already hides people’s private phone numbers from non-added users on the app.

The texting service has gained popularity among cryptocurrency fans. The change is part of an update 9.2 (1) that went live on December 6 and automatically allowed users to eliminate timers on messages in brand-new conversations. Users can buy “blockchain-powered anonymous numbers” from Fragment, the Pavel Durov-founded decentralized auction site, to use the functionality. Fragment sells user identities and anonymous phone numbers that are exclusive to Telegram. The Open Network, a cryptocurrency linked with Telegram, is used for purchases on the site (TON) (2). Fragment regrettably does not provide its services to residents of the United States.
How will this affect the platform?
After acquiring a number, people may then use these private numbers to join Telegram and receive SMS with verification codes. On Fragment, users may buy a random number for 9 tons ($16) or participate in auctions to buy and sell them. As “+888 8 888” now has the most demand, it suggests that certain specific numbers are drawing a lot of attention. 33,075 TON ($60 527) was the current bid.
In reaction to yet another instance of misbehavior by a centralized crypto organization, Durov disclosed through his Telegram channel on November 30 that the business was developing a set of decentralized tools in the wake of the FTX fiasco last month. Durov added to Fragment by saying that, among other things, Telegram plans to provide noncustodial wallets and decentralized exchanges. The answer is simple: blockchain-based projects need to return to their decentralized origins. He added that users of cryptocurrencies should move to self-hosted wallets and transactions that anyone third party does not trust.
